Matt Smart

Geochemist

Matt Smart is a geochemist specializing in aqueous geochemistry, stable isotope systems, and Earth system modeling. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his Ph.D. in Applied Earth Sciences from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, where his research focused on nutrient cycling, redox chemistry, and environmental change through Earth’s history. Before joining Hydro-Ressources, he served as an Assistant Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he founded the institution’s first isotope geochemistry and paleoceanography research program.

A native of Colorado, Matt grew up exploring the state’s mountain geology and still spends his free time skiing, hiking, and rock-hounding with his family in the Rockies.

Matt’s passion for field work and applied geochemistry brought him to the team in 2025 where his geochemical skill set can be applied to help solve real-world problems in the mining industry.
